Myaamiaki: Today and Yesterday
The Miami Tribe of Oklahoma is a vibrant sovereign nation based in Northeast Oklahoma, but with ongoing ties to their pre-removal homelands in what are today the states of Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. In this presentation George Ironstrack will give an overview of the Miami Tribe today and summarize the history of his community with an eye to creating an understanding of the challenges facing Myaamiaki ‘Miami Indians.’ Historically, Myaamia leaders sought to protect their nation by being good neighbors with the non-Indigenous communities that settled near them. The Myaamia community works to continue this practice today through education.
